Bookies slash odds on Danny Dyer becoming the next Doctor Who

Danny Dyer has been named as one of the front runners fans are betting on to take over the titular role from . 

Jodie, 39, will leave the show in autumn this year and, following Danny’s announcement he is quitting , bookmakers has slashed his odds from 66/1 to 16/ 1.

Last week, Danny, 44, announced he is leaving his role as Mick Carter on the series after nine years because he now wants to try other things.

On how the odds on the next Doctor Who have dramatically changed since his announcement, a spokeswoman for Ladbrokes told : ‘Danny may be not be the archetypal actor to portray the Doctor but that’s just why he might be the perfect choice to make a big change on the show.

‘He’s all the rage with punters and has already said he wants to take on different roles.

‘So we could see him swapping The Queen Vic for the Tardis — and we’ve slashed our odds accordingly.’

Earlier this week, Danny admitted he had wanted to quit  ’for a while’ as he spoke out for the first time since announcing his departure from the soap. 

Speaking on his , he said: ’When you’re in a job like a soap your contract comes up for renewal and every time it has they’ve asked me to stay, and I’m very grateful for that. Because I’ve seen a lot of people come and go. It’s very tough.  

‘I always debate whether I want to sign again and I’ve been contemplating a while now about whether it’s time to roll the dice, take the leap.

Lydia is bookmaker Coral’s favourite to replace Jodie at 3-1 odds, while Fisayo Akinade and Omari Douglas (both 5-1) are joint second favourites and Olly Alexander comes next in the betting at 6-
